November blooms In a Vase on Monday

I think I mentioned that I have some Chrysanthemum plants. They should be blooming and filling vases for this late end of the year but in fact they have grown very tall (about 5ft) and have been contentedly sitting there in tight bud for weeks.
This vase was to celebrate the two which have tried to open. I cut them and walked around to see what would compliment them and found plenty of things still flowering at this late stage.
We have had a few light frosts but not enough so far to destroy anything. The dahlias and nasturtiums are still going but probably not for long. It actually stopped raining for five minutes and the week has been beautifully sunny which does lift the spirit.

In the vase:
Chrysanthemum Shamrock Green
Chrysanthemum Sheer Purple ( I think, though it's not purple)
Passalong Persicaria which is establishing very well and making it's first appearance here in a vase. Red Dragon from Cathy via Noelle. I thought it and the green Chrysanthemum would sing together.

Penstemon 'Sour Grapes'
Nameless pink rose
Feverfew flowers

Pittosporum foliage
Artemisia 'Powis castle'
Astrantia ?
Potentilla nepalensis 'Miss Wilmott' - an absolute star! This has been flowering pretty much for the two years since I bought it and, to cap it all, is now surrounded by dozens of seedlings.

What a happy vase for November.
The vase is plain grey and egg shaped. Old and cheap but a good shape and colour.

Many thanks to Cathy at Rambling in the Garden for hosting and inspiring - In a Vase on Monday.

  1. Your plant list sounds like the whole of a book on best plants for the garden in Autumn! May I put my name down for Miss Wilmott? Such a lovely arrangement and some real stars there but the Green Chrysanthemum is the star.

    1. You are on the list. I'm glad you like the Chrysanthemums. Perhaps the flowers are more precious as there are only a few.

  2. You've got so much still blooming in your garden, Alison. What a beautiful arrangement.

  3. I can't even imagine 5 foot tall chrysanthemums! That 'Shamrock Green' variety is especially pretty. I also love the Potentilla, another on the long list of plants I wish I could grow here. The whole composition is just perfect. I wish you could send us some of your excess rain. Our rain year is counted from October 1st and, thus far, our sum total is 0.15/inch, which is not an auspicious start to the season.

    1. They are quite ridiculous, I must have them in the wrong place and I need to research what they like. I also love Potentilla and have several in different colours but none flowers as long this one. I must have it in the right place! I'd love to send you some rain. I've discovered this autumn that the whole garden is covered in moss. Something else you probably don't have! Stones, paths and soil are all green with it.

    1. Thank you. Sadly the Chrysanth plants are leggy and feeble and not great to look at. I'll take some pictures.

  5. Lovely arrangement, Alison! The green mum is one of my favorite florist flowers during the winter when I'm forced to buy my flowers. I didn't realize they grow so tall! The potentilla caught my eye and your positive review makes me want one. I'll have to see if they are available here.

  6. What beautiful flowers and you've arranged them expertly. The chrysanthemums are striking in color and size. Did you buy them as plants or grow from seed. Well worth the wait.

    1. I bought plug plants in the spring. I hope I can keep them overwinter and replant or take cuttings. Or both!

  7. Oh yes, so happy. Your vase really made me smile! Such a pretty arrangement, and lovle photos! :) The Potentilla is gorgeous and I think I might have to google it and see if I can find one here. And I smiled too when I saw Red Dragon... I got mine after seeing it on Cathy's blog first. She should be getting commission for promoting it! LOL!

  10. What a dream the purple and green chrysanth are together with the Red Dragon! Look forward to hearing more about their future lives in the garden! Potentilla 'Miss Wilmott'is a real sweetie, I must add it to my list. The vase has just the right kind of neck and low-key presence to show the flowers off perfectly. Thanks for those lovely colours at the start of November!
